How do splitting knives work and what are your options with a BTD firewood processor?

How do splitting knives work and what are your options with a BTD firewood processor?

A splitting knife determines how the log is divided after sawing.
BTD Technics offers several variants suited to your wood type, log diameter, cutting length and desired production speed.
All BTD splitting knives are engineered to require minimal force for optimal splitting performance.
This guide explains the differences and helps you select the right splitting knife for your work.

What does a splitting knife do?

After cutting, the splitting cylinder pushes the log against the knife, which splits the wood into several pieces.
The more sections you create, the smaller the final logs become – and the more power is required.
A well-chosen knife therefore increases efficiency while reducing the splitting force needed for the same result.

At BTD, the knives are designed so that splitting forces are minimised by shear-mounted side blades, divided into up to four stages.

Which types of splitting knives are available?

Knife type Number of pieces Recommended use
4-way 4 pieces All wood types, large stoves / wood gasifiers
6-way (standard) 6 pieces All wood types, all-round use
8-way 8 pieces All wood types, ideal for fireplaces
12-way (ring knife) 12 pieces For small pieces of light wood, short cutting lengths (PROplus only)
